Upload your list & map merge tags inside Omnisend

What you'll learn

  • Upload your CSV of subscribers into Omnisend's Audience
  • Map every field, and create new custom properties for anything Omnisend doesn't recognize
  • Add fields ahead of time even with blank data - fill them in later when you have it

Hi there. Now we're going to go through the full process of uploading your CSV lead list to Omnisend, creating your first email campaign, adding all of the merge tags of the variable data that you'd like to insert into the email and have appear on the landing page or any page of your marketing funnel for any customer or lead. And we're going to send an actual live email, and I'm going to show you what the final result looks like inside of two different inboxes with two different pieces of lead data.

So from here in the Omnisend dashboard, the first thing we have to do is go down to our Audience and add our first list. So from here, I'm going to Upload from a file.

Just so you can see, it's going to be two different pieces of data - one for Eugene Schwartz, and we've got country, city, prefix, birthday, birth month, birth year, the company name, and the company role. And nickname is purposely not filled out, just so you can see - you can literally add any piece of data you have about any of your leads or customers. If you've got it, it can be added both to the ESPs themselves and used inside of Feels Personal on any page that you want to.

So we've added the data here, and now we're going to Continue to Mapping. And it hasn't done a very good job of guessing what all of the data is, so we're going to have to go through this piece by piece. We've got first name, we've got last name, city.

When they don't have a piece of data (which is going to be very often if you've never done it before), we're going to have to create a new one. When we need to create a new one, all you have to do is click on the box and type in what you'd like to call this data for you to remember. Click Create new, and there we go.

Now for prefix, we're going to select - I've already created it before - but you would repeat the process as we would for any other piece of data as well, which we're going to see down here for birthday, month, and everything else.

Let's see if they've already pre-filled this with company name or company role. They haven't. So we're going to Create new, company name. Create new, company role. Create new, birthday. Create new, birth month. Create new, birth year. Create new. So that shows you how you can literally add any piece of data you have about your leads or customers to your CSV file and to your ESP itself.

So we're continuing to organize. And you can either add tags or segment if you'd like to. I'm just going to Continue to Subscribed. They all subscribed. If you've got old data inside of your Omnisend, you can update it if you've added new data to your leads. And I'll Finish the import.

Okay. That's how you add new leads to your Omnisend account. In the next video, we're going to create your first email and insert all of the merge tags. See you there.

Step 2: ~8 min

Build your first personalized email broadcast campaign with Omnisend and Feels Personal

What you'll learn

  • Compose your first broadcast campaign in Omnisend
  • Insert merge tags via the Insert Personalization Tag menu
  • Strip the display URL down to a curiosity-laden form while every variable still works under the hood

Okay, now we're doing video 2 for Omnisend, where we are now going to actually create the first broadcast email campaign using all the merge tags that we have about your audience and your leads and customers.

So to do that, we go to Campaigns, we'll create an email campaign. We're going to send it with this subject line, "Omnisend demo for Feels Personal". We'll call that the campaign as well.

We'll choose our email template - I'm going to choose something very basic. Let's go with this one here. Now I'm going to delete all the unnecessary stuff. We're going to keep this incredibly basic just to begin - you'll be able to add any copy, design, anything you'd like to all of your emails of course.

So we'll call this "Omnisend demo for Feels Personal". And down here is our "First example", and down here is our "Second example". Now while I delete these other parts, I'll tell you why I'm putting all this - it's because I'm going to show you two different ways to format the email links themselves to maximize curiosity that's built up in your customers and boost your click-through rates through the roof.

So we're going to go to Feels Personal, to the product itself, right now. And in the Build My URL tab, you're going to select any page you'll be sending your customers or leads to. I've created a page here for our example called demo. You're going to add all of the data that you have - so we've got personalization, the location and city, their company and their role, their prefix, and of course all of their birth date data that we mapped in the previous video. Activate that.

Now Feels Personal gives you a complete URL with the same structure that you need to add all the merge tags for inside of Omnisend. So we're going to copy that.

So now that we're back in Omnisend, we're going to paste that link in here. And what we have to do is now build out this entire URL using the merge tags that Omnisend provides. So we're going to copy the first part of the URL, up to the page that we're sending the leads and customers to. We're going to paste that, and now we have to copy the structure exactly.

So we have /c/, and now we have to find the country and city variables. So to do that, we come down to here for Omnisend - that has Insert Personalization Tag - and we're looking for country. Contact Country. You don't have to have a default, because you've already got the data in the ESP CSV file that you uploaded - but you can put any default fallback value you'd like. You can also set that inside of Feels Personal.

So now we go hyphen, and now we're looking for city, which we have here. So for example, we could put "your city" - and it's just going to change the way the actual merge tag looks - but it doesn't matter, because as I said, you won't have this problem. Feels Personal can never show a broken page.

So after here, we have to put /CR/. Now we're looking for company hyphen role. So we come down to Variables and find company. All of these are down the bottom under our custom properties. So company name, company role. So we've done this.

So now we're looking at /PL/ prefix - /PL/, prefix.

Now we're looking for /BD/, and then all of the birthday data. So /BD/. Now we're looking for birthday. Now what I'm going to do is, instead of a hyphen, I'm going to put an underscore - and that's just to show you that it doesn't matter. Feels Personal can read both underscores or hyphens between the variable data. So now we're inserting birth month, and I'll put a hyphen this time. And now we look for birth year, which is up here - birth year. And now we've got it up to here.

So now we need /P/, then first name, last name. So /P/, first name, last name. And now we're going to do this - and soon I'm going to show you how you can set up Feels Personal so you never have to do this again. This is a one-time action of having to go through all of these merge tags. So after your first broadcast email, this will all become a more or less automated process. I'll show you how to do that soon.

So we have Contact First Name, hyphen, Contact Last Name. And now one last important thing is to end this with a trailing forward slash / at the end of the URL - it's just best practice. This is what Feels Personal does automatically in the Build My URL tab - you can see it appends a forward slash at the end. So just keep that in mind when you're building your URL for the first time.

So we're going to copy all of that. And now we're going to find Insert Link. And we're going to insert it in the URL there. And merge inserted.

Okay, so now I've inserted the link, and changed the link color to blue, because for some reason Omnisend made it automatically white. So now I can see it, and it's bolded.

So what we're going to do from here is now come from right next to demo. And we're going to copy everything down to where it starts Contact First Name, Contact Last Name. And we're going to delete all that. And I'll tell you why now.

Because the difference between what your view link is - it doesn't matter. It can be whatever you want it to be to generate the most curiosity. As long as all the merge data is in the URL itself sitting behind that link - that's where the magic of Feels Personal actually does its job. So this is going to display in the inbox as /demo/ first name, last name.

And as our second example, I'm going to paste that entire URL again. And this time, we're going to copy it all. I'm going to use that as the URL itself again. So if it changes color, just bear with me. Insert Link. I'm going to use that entire merge data.

Okay, and it's set the blue color. Perfect. So I'm going to just bold that to make it look a bit nicer. And this time, what I'm going to do is come all the way from next to the first forward slash after the domain URL. And we're going to cut that down all the way to first name. So you're going to see the emails that arrive in our inbox in the next video. It's going to be /demo/ first name - last name. And now it's literally going to be the base URL or the base domain slash first name - last name. So it really does look like these pages have been built exactly for that particular lead or customer.

So now that we've done this, I'll just add "Let's see". Now we're going to save and Choose Recipients. And now we'll go to all of our subscribers. You can send a test email if you'd like to, but I know this is going to work, so it's okay. Now, before we click Send Now - that should be the end of this video. So I'll see you in the next video.

Step 3: ~6 min

Click Here To Show Full Video Transcript:Okay, here we are for the third video for Omnisend where we're actually going to send the campaign we just created...

Okay, here we are for the third video for Omnisend, where we're actually going to send the campaign we just created with all the merge tags and have a look at the live results inside of two different email inboxes.

So we're going to click the Send Now button. And what I'm going to do is pause this video quickly and wait until the emails have actually been delivered, and then I'll come back and show you.

Okay, Omnisend has now sent our campaign. So let's have a look at the live results in our inbox. We've got the email here. And you can see it has added the merge tags properly. So it really does look like a web page has been built just for me in both places.

Now as a quick reminder, this is the data that we should be seeing for this first one - Zachery Vellis, Australia, Sydney, 29th of February, 1990. And I'm a marketer who works for Google.

So let's click on the link. And as you can see, all of the information has been populated on this demo page. So we have first name, prefix, last name, location data, a marketer who's working for Google, and the leap year birthday of the 29th of February, 1990.

Now we'll come back. I'll close that page. Now let's click the second link just to make sure it's all functioning as expected. And there you have it. We've totally replaced all the variables correctly. And it's like I am looking at a page built just for me in this marketing funnel.

Now let's go to the other inbox and have a look at how this one seems. You can see it has merged the data correctly here as well for Eugene Schwartz. As a reminder, we should be seeing USA, Seattle, 18th of March, 1927. And he happens to be a copywriter working for Anthropic.

So let's have a look at the page this time. The user clicks the link, opens it up. And there we have it. All of the data has been merged perfectly as well. Eugene, his prefix Mr., Schwartz from Seattle, USA, a copywriter working for Anthropic. And we have his birthday in here now.

So it's worked absolutely perfectly, just as it will for all of your customers and leads as well. I'll close that page, and now let's click the second link just to be sure. We open that. And there you have it. It's come up all as expected again with all of the data being merged perfectly.

So now what I want to show you is one last thing. So we've come back to the Campaigns field of Omnisend, and what I've done was take the campaign we just sent and I made a copy of it. So here it is here. And why I want you to do this and go into it is for a very specific reason.

We go to Edit Content. So what we're going to do is click on this link once, and we're going to go to this one, Edit Link. So that's the entire URL we've created with all the merge tags. We're going to copy all of that. And then we're going to paste it into the email here. And this is why - this gives us all of the different merge tags that we've just used for all of the data of our customers and leads that we have just uploaded, or we're using inside of Omnisend.

Now you're going to go back to your Feels Personal product itself. And this is where the power of this product comes in. You go to the ESP Variables, and you're going to select Omnisend. And then you're going to Apply the ESP.

Now we've already made an effort to pre-fill as much of the merge tags as possible that come with Omnisend as default. So you'll be able to see here, it's already got the Contact Country and Contact City.

So we're going to go back into the email where we just copied down the fully formatted link. And we're going to grab the rest of the information. So for example, here we have company name. So I'm going to copy all of that exactly as it is - not with this hyphen at the end - we'll have to remove that. But I can come back to company name, paste it here, remove the hyphen, and save it.

Now I'm going to do the same thing for company role. So I'm going to come back here. Here's company role here. I'm going to copy all of this. I'm going to go back, and I'm going to save it for company role. I'll Update that. Now I'm not going to bore you with me doing all of these. So I'm going to pause the video quickly and fill these all in, so I can show you why at the end.

Okay, I finished copying and pasting all of the custom merge tags that were created by Omnisend. Now the reason I've done this is because you only ever have to build the URL once inside of Omnisend the first time. Once you've been able to copy over all of the merge tags into here and save them...

Now we go back to the Build My URL, and we're going to go through the exact same process - the demo page. And I'm going to put all the data that we used in the last campaign. So we're going to have the personalization data, location data, their company and their role, their prefix, and their birthday data. And we're going to activate that.

And now from now on, Feels Personal is going to spit out the exact URL. You'll be able to simply copy and paste it into each email campaign from this day onwards with the exact merge tags that Omnisend uses. So you'll never have to do any editing again. You'll simply click the Copy URL button. You'll be able to go straight back to this email, and you'll be able to see if we paste it here - it's the exact same URL that you copied into the campaign the very first time through.

So one job, one time. And after that, no problem at all. It's all automated for you inside of Feels Personal.

So I hope that shows you just how powerful Feels Personal is going to prove for you using it inside of Omnisend - to send out personalized links and entire landing pages, sales pages, or any page of your marketing funnel to every single lead and customer that you have. I can't wait to hear your success stories and results as a result of using Feels Personal. Thank you.

Common Known Pitfalls With Omnisend To Be Aware Of

  • !It's possible Omnisend will insert your link with white text by default - on a white email background, that makes the link completely invisible. The walkthrough video above shows exactly what to do if it happens to you (highlight the link, change the color, optionally bold it). Worth a quick check in the preview before you schedule the campaign - you'll spot it instantly.
  • !What it would look like in the inbox if the link color stayed white - the link is still there, just unreadable against the white email background:Hi there, click /demo/john-doe to see your personalized page. After fixing the color (blue, your brand color, anything readable) and bolding it:Hi there, click /demo/john-doe to see your personalized page.
