Hello and welcome to the video series where we will go through exactly how you can upload all of your leads and customers to your Kit ESP, create your first email campaign, and add all of the merge tags so they play nicely with Feels Personal. And then of course we'll be sending out that campaign to a couple of email addresses so you can see exactly how the email will look live for your own leads and customers.

I've set up a page on Feels Personal that has a whole heap of different variable data so you can see exactly how it will work.

First of all, in this video we're going to be adding your leads and setting up their merge tags. So to do that we have to go into Grow and Subscribers, and now we're going to Import CSV. I've already prepared one - I'm going to show you what it looks like inside.

It's two different leads - one for Eugene Schwartz and one for me, Zachery Vellis. We've got a whole heap of different merge tags that we're going to be adding, including first name, last name, country, city, prefix, birthday, birth month, birth year, company name, and company role, and nickname (which we've on purpose left blank just so you can see that you can add merge tags even if you don't have the data right now, if you are planning to get it and use it later on your leads or customers).

So inside of Kit we now have to go and line up all the different fields. So first name → first name, last name → last name, country → country, city → city. Yeah, let us scroll down here. We're going to add prefix → prefix.

Birthday doesn't exist. So what you have to do when one of your tags - sorry, when one of your headers from your CSV file - doesn't exist inside of Kit, you simply type out what you want the name to be. So for this one I'm going to call it birth day and I'm going to Create it. Then for birth month, I'm going to call it birth month and I'm going to create it. Then I'm going to create birth year - create. Company name - does this exist as one of the pre-created ones? No. So we have to go company name, or however you want to remember it. Company role - create.

So everything is lined up. We have to have the emails in there, of course. And then nickname - we can add that as well, even though there's no data now you would be able to fill that out in the future. So everything is now mapped perfectly. Yep. So we click Next, and Start Your Import. This will be done very quickly. Here they are now - so they've shown up.

So that's the end of part one. In the next video we're going to create your first broadcast campaign and add the merge tags and send it. I'll see you in the next video.

Step 2: ~8 min

Build your first personalized email broadcast campaign with Kit and Feels Personal

What you'll learn

  • Compose your first broadcast in Kit's text-only classic editor
  • Insert a fully-functioning Feels Personal link using Kit's '/' personalization menu and custom-field shortcut
  • Strip the display URL down to a curiosity-laden form while every variable still works under the hood

Welcome back. This is video 2 for Kit where we are now going to build your first email campaign and add the merge tags in a way that plays nicely with Feels Personal, and then we're going to send that campaign to the emails in the CSV file that we just finished uploading in video 1.

So to do that we have to go to Send and Broadcast Campaign. I'm going to create a new broadcast. I'm going to keep it very, very simple - just a Text only classic. We'll call it - we'll set the subject line as "Kit email demo for Feels Personal". I'm just going to close this over here, and then we can start filling out the email itself.

So I'm going to call it "Kit email demo for Feels Personal". Here's "Example 1". Here's "Amazing example 2". I'm doing this because I'm going to show you two different ways you can style the demonstration or display URL in the email to maximize curiosity.

And to do that, from here we have to go over to the Feels Personal product itself, in the Build My URL tab. You're going to select the page on your website that you're going to send your traffic to. In this case I've set up one called demo, which has all the different variable data we uploaded from the CSV ready to be displayed as an example.

So I'm going to now insert all the different variables - we have the personal data, first name, last name, location data, their company role, everything that we have in the CSV, their prefix, and of course their birthday data that we mapped as well. So I have to activate that. Now Feels Personal gives you a full URL in the exact style and format that you need to create inside of Kit.

I'm going to copy that URL, come back to Kit, and I'm going to paste it here just so I've got an example to work with. On the next line we're going to copy the page itself that you're going to be sending to - copy that, paste here - and now what we have to do is build this URL except with the actual merge tags that Kit uses.

So we have to build it exactly as it looks up here. So /c/, and now we're going to add personalization. To add personalization normally it would be this button here - but when you've got custom merge tags like we've mapped in video 1, you actually have to come down here and, with a space, you have to click the forward slash / key. That brings up this, and then you'll select Personalization. And now these are the four that it normally makes easy for you, but we're going to come down here and select the Custom Field. And this is where we're going to look for all the pieces that we need.

So the first one is country, and we're going to Add to Email. So now that's got the merge tag just there. Then we're going to put a hyphen. And now we're going to do the same thing - a space and a forward slash to get personalization - and then we're going to go here again and we're going to look for city this time, which is here. Add to Email. Now we're going to continue this so it's structured the exact same as the example URL up here.

But what is very important is that there cannot be any spaces between any parts of this URL. So we're going to remove this one here. Spaces inside the merge tag itself are fine - that's how Kit knows what to insert - but outside of it, we have to remove them. So between the hyphens and between any forward slashes. So we're going to add a forward slash here because we finished.

And now we can see that the next part of the URL is /CR/, and then company hyphen role. So I'm going to put /CR/. And we're going to add a forward slash to bring up the personalization of company - we're going to select from down here, which we called company name. Add to Email. Hyphen. Forward slash, go back to personalization to find company role. We have there - Add to Email. And now once again, I'm going to remove those spaces before I forget. So one comes from there, here, here.

And now we are up to /PL/ prefix. So we're going to put that in - /PL/. Now we're going to add forward slash, personalization, choose prefix.

What I'm going to show you is a little trick to remember - instead of a hyphen every time, you can put an underscore. Feels Personal doesn't distinguish between the two, so you can put a hyphen or an underscore between each one of the variables. So we're inserting birth month, so instead of an underscore we'll now put a hyphen again, and it's all going to work the same. Forward slash. Now looking for the last personalization of birth year. There we go.

Now just to clean this up, I'm going to go back and remove all the spaces again that I've added, just before I forget there - between the underscore, between the hyphens, everything.

Now to finish it off, we're up to /P/ first name, last name. So we're almost done. /P/, looking for personalization first name - which is one of the actual fields that was mapped that exists in Kit, so we can click it from here. Subscriber First Name. And then we go hyphen, personalization, last name. Add to Email. Perfect.

And now it's always best practice to end this URL with a trailing forward slash / at the end of the URL as well. So now we go back and tidy up the last spaces in the URL, and now we'll be ready to go.

What I suggest to you is to quickly copy all of this URL that you've just created into a text document. I'll show you why in a moment, but the reason for this will be in the next part of this video. I'm going to show you how to save all of these merge tags that Kit has created so you never have to go through and play this game of selecting them all again. It'll all be automated in the future. So do save these down.

But for now, what we're going to do is copy this entire link, and now we're going to Insert Link. So Add Link. And now I'm going to copy and paste everything into there, and click Apply. And now that that's done, I'm going to copy the whole thing, and I'm going to bold it, and I'm going to underline it, and I'm going to add a color to it as well, to make it look like a real hyperlink.

So there we have it. It might not look it now, but it will show blue when you send your preview email or when you actually send this live as a campaign. So I can now delete this line here, which was our URL to base everything off of.

Now I'm going to paste this same URL that we created up here down here, and same thing - I'm going to copy it all and add it as a link. And now what we're going to do is, up here, I'm going to go from the end of demo and I'm going to delete it all the way down to first name. So now what this has done is the URL that will actually be displayed in the email sent out to your subscribers, leads, customers, will be your base domain, the page you want to send them to - oh, missed a forward slash there, but that's okay - subscriber first name-subscriber last name. So it's going to look like a page built just for them with their name there after /demo.

And now to repeat this trick down here, I'm going to remove the leading https:// part, and I'm even going to remove the demo part all the way down to the start of the first name merge tag. So we get rid of all that, and this time the link that they'll see down here is even shorter - it's going to be the base domain / first name - last name.

And just to finish it off, we're going to bold these links. This one's all bolded - just to make sure. There we go. So both of these links should now work perfectly. I'm going to add this "Let's see" part at the bottom, and that should be it.

What we're going to do now is click the Continue button, because both of these links are going to work. And from here, we're going to stop the video - and in video 3, we're actually going to send this entire broadcast campaign to the two leads on our list. And I'll show you what it looks like live in their inbox as they click the working links, and the personalization data for each lead shows on the demo page that I have created for us. I'll see you in the next video.

Welcome to video 3 for Kit, where we are now sending the actual campaign we just built - an email with all the merge tags that play nicely with Feels Personal. So we are now going to send this campaign out to the two subscribers on the CSV file that we uploaded in video 1. I am going to send this email out, and I will come back to this video once they have arrived in the inbox.

Okay, the emails have arrived in the inbox, and now I am going to show you what they look like live for me, and what it is going to look like for your leads and customers as well. We open up the email, and you can see the merge tags have updated perfectly for the customer or the lead. You can see that it's built just in front of the /demo page - and down here in "Amazing example 2", there is no https:// and we have even removed the /demo part. So it looks like your base URL domain / first name - last name. Incredible curiosity provoker.

Before we click these links, I'll just remind you of the data we should expect to see on the page. Zachery Vellis, Australia, Sydney, 29th of February, 1990. And I happen to be a marketer working for Google. So let's click the link and verify.

And there you go. All of the variable placeholder data has been updated for this customer or lead. First name, prefix, last name, location data. I am a marketer working for Google, and I happen to be born on a leap year. And there is the birthday data. So I am going to close this page now, and we will click the second link just so you can be sure it works. And there you go - all updated perfectly and as we would expect.

So now we are going to close this page, and I am going to go to the second lead that we sent this email to - just here. And this time the first name, last name merge tags have been updated to our other customer, Eugene Schwartz. So this shows that every single one of the leads and customers on your list is going to see their own personalized data in the links.

So it's worked for both. Before we click the link, as a reminder, it'll be Eugene Schwartz this time from USA, Seattle, born on March 18th, 1927. And he happens to be a copywriter for Anthropic. So let's click the link and see the exact same page, but this time working for another customer. There you go - all the data has been updated perfectly. We've got Eugene and his prefix, last name, his location data being Seattle, USA this time. And as we said, he's a copywriter working for Anthropic, and he was born almost a hundred years ago.

So it's worked perfectly for both our customers or leads on the CSV file, just as it will for you. Now we'll come back - I'll close that page, we'll click the second link just to be sure. So there we go. And there we have it. All the data updated. All the variables are perfect for this lead, just as they will for every other lead.

So what I want to do is show you one little bonus before we go. If we go back into Kit, into the campaigns that we just sent, we'll go to the campaign broadcast email. And this time I'm going to duplicate it. And now I am going to highlight the entire link. I'm going to click the link. And this time we're going to copy everything inside it. And we're going to paste it right here. So this is all of the merge tags that we had from before.

Now, why we're doing this is because it might've been a little bit annoying for you to have to type this exact link out perfectly. And you definitely don't want to be doing this every single time you're sending out a broadcast email.

So with all of these merge tags neatly in front of us, we're going to go to Feels Personal, the product, again. And over here, we're going to go to ESP Variables. You're going to select the one we just worked inside of, which is Kit. You're going to Apply the data. And now it is updated.

Now, we are only able to pre-fill the fields inside of Feels Personal with what was publicly available - which in this case was only the first name merge tag. So this is why we've copied them down inside of the email again from Kit. You're going to go one by one and update the list inside of Feels Personal.

I'm going to show you two examples just so you can see how it updates and saves. So we're going to add the last name - Update. And you can see it has now saved the merge tag here. Now I'm going to go and grab - let's grab, let's grab country. So it's here, subscriber country. And we're going to put it down into country and save it again. Now I'm not going to bore you with me filling out the rest of this. So I'm going to pause the video and come back once I've filled them out.

Okay, we're back, and I've filled out all of the fields except of course nickname, which we purposely uploaded to Kit without any data. But anytime in the future, you would be able to add an actual piece of data to Kit for a nickname, and insert those on your pages as well. You just come back here and insert the placeholder merge tag value.

Why we're doing this? Well, now, anytime you're creating a new campaign in the future, you can simply come to the Build My URL tab again. We're going to go through the exact same process as we did in video 2 - demo page. I'm going to select all the same data that we added as personalization into the broadcast campaign - the company role, the first name, the location, the prefix, and of course the birthday data from here. Activate the trigger.

And instead of giving you a link to copy the format of, it now gives you the exact link that you can use inside of Kit. These are all the merge tags that Kit uses that you've just updated and saved inside of the ESP Variables. So instead of ever having to type all that out again and going through that hassle, you only ever have to do it once - the first time. Come over, save the variables inside Feels Personal, and now all you ever do is build the page itself here in the Build My URL tab. You click the Copy URL. You take that to your very next broadcast campaign, and it's as simple as pasting in the link.

I hope that's useful for you. We've now been through the entire process of uploading your customers and leads into Kit, merging all of the different variable placeholder tags that you have data on for your customers. We've built an entire email broadcast campaign. We've added the merge tags to that campaign. So you've seen it live arrive in the inbox. You've seen all of the merge tags work perfectly. And you've seen a live demo page of two completely different customers with totally different data being updated automatically onto the landing page that you send every single person on your lead and customer list to.

Common Known Pitfalls With Kit To Be Aware Of

  • !Kit's 'Personalization' button only shows the four built-in fields like first name - to insert custom merge tags you mapped from your CSV, you have to type a space, then '/', then choose 'Personalization' and 'Custom Field'.
  • !Spaces inside merge tags are fine - that's how Kit knows what to insert - but any space between merge tags (or between hyphens and slashes in your URL) silently breaks the link at send time. Strip every external space before saving.
  • !A broken URL - the highlighted spaces between each piece silently break the link at send time:example.com/demo/ {{ subscriber.first_name }} - {{ subscriber.last_name }}
  • !These same merge tags - the spaces inside the braces are completely fine. Kit reads them correctly:{{ subscriber.first_name }}
    {{ subscriber.last_name }}
